A nameserver is a computer server that translates domain names (like intergen.org or yourcompany.com) into IP addresses. When you enter a domain name into your web browser, your computer sends a request to the nameserver to find the IP address (like 127.0.0.1)  associated with that domain name. The nameserver responds with the IP address, and your computer uses that address to connect to the appropriate website.
